Most people would think that a vacation home would be used for just that.. a vacation. However, due to an abundance of discretionary income during the past decade my vacations were generally out of state or out of the country. My vacation home was used on week-ends during the summer while I worked 50-60 hour work weeks. When it came time to "vacation" it had to be a destination that was arrived at by air travel... otherwise it wasn't "really" a vacation.
Oddly enough, when my husband and I purchased our get-away home we told ourselves that it would be our vacation destination forever. This was how we rationalized strapping ourselves with yet another mortgage. We would forgo all other vacations in order to pay off the house... and then my business exploded and thoughts of vacationing in the same place every year evaporated.
This summer, I am happily vacationing at my vacation home for the first time in over 16 years, and how thankful I am that I can afford it.
